Example BULATS Report I
Task A
You have been asked to write a 180-200 word report recommending types of training for people in your department.
Write about:
You may also write any other points you think are important.
Report on Recommendations for Staff Training
Our company currently has a successful training for our staff. However, this report suggests ways in which it could be improved. The report was commissioned by senior management.
The increased use of English in our company means that increased focus must be given to English training. Currently, English training is only open to those staff who expressly wish to do it. My recommendation is that in future, English training becomes compulsory. The number of overseas transfer opportunities has increased this year, and it is very clear from some of the videoconferences that certain staff are struggling with basic business English.
Another area in which current training could be improved is time management. Our company has had a long history of productive overtime, but recent government regulations have placed increasing limits on overtime hours. It is therefore vitally important that office workers receive specific time-management training so as to know how to work more efficiently. I myself have worked very successfully with a time management trainer who taught me about “power hours,” and I think all staff would significantly benefit from such advice.
I hereby formally submit my recommendations for discussion.

Example BULATS Report II
Task B
Your company’s expansion and recruitment of staff means you must find a bigger office. Write a 180-200 word report on an office building you have visited.
Explain why it would be suitable for your company by referring to:
You may also refer to any other information which you deem to be important.
Report on potentially suitable office premises
Due to the recent expansion in staff numbers, senior management has commissioned this report on a possible relocation of the present office.
The subject of this report is my recent visit to Sola City, a new complex that opened in May 2013 in the Ochanomizu area of Tokyo. Although the building is new, the rent is slightly cheaper than the current location in Otemachi, making it a definite cost-saver.
The size of the premises I visited was 120 square meters, about 20 square meters larger than our existing office. The extra space is more than adequate to support the 10 extra employees that have recently been recruited. The layout, in line with current trends, is open plan – which our staff have frequently expressed support for.
The unique selling point of this office location, however, is the sheer number of facilities on offer. The complex is part-residential, part-business and part-retail, meaning that numerous restaurants and shops can be found within. The complex is also directly connected to Shin-Ochanomizu subway station, and within easy walkable distance of both Ochanomizu JR and Metro Stations. In short, this is a highly desirable location.
I hereby formally submit my recommendations for consideration.
